“Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success.”
When Andrew said these very words to me, I knew exactly what I needed to do.
And he did SAY them to me, he didn’t read them from a book or look it up on his phone (bloody luddite), he recounted Ernest Shackleton’s advert for his Antarctic expedition, word for word whilst leaning against the bar in our favourite eastend pub at 2 in the afternoon.
Armed with these words, along with the countless Edwardian and Victorian explorers Andrew often regaled me with, the guidance of the almighty Joseph Conrad book Heart of Darkness and most important of all, a killer set of songs of heroic failure.....and glamour modelling, I signed up immediately.
What a trip.
